I recently imported into Jamaica, a WINDMAX HY-1000 (24V) wind turbine to augment my PV system (12 x 180 watt panels). After one month the charge controller supplied with the windmax system has malfunctioned. (The PV system has its separate OUTBACK Flexmax Charge controler).

Would your XANTREX C40 Charge Controller be a suitable replacement?

    Hi,
I would recommend the Xantrex C60 over the C40 for your wind turbine. The wind turbine is probably going into dump load mode at about 29 volts on a 24 volt system. For a 1000 Watt wind turbine, this is about 34 amps. But, the turbine may peak out at 1200-1300 Watts on rare occasions which would be up to ~45 amps of current.

Thus, it would be a much better decision to go with the C60 (60 Amps) Xantrex.

You should be able to use the existing dump load and rectifier that came with your Windmax so you would not need to get anything else from us. Unless, of course, the malfunction has something to do with your existing rectifier or dump load. You should test these to be sure they are OK.

If you have any other questions with respect to this matter, you can post them in this forum thread and we will respond.
