Hello all! Here are some of the photos of the Vertical wind turbine we have been working on. It is about 80% (now 100% - 9/2/12) complete. All constructive opinions are welcome! Our test "rig". Even with the trees we can get some decent wind. We have a tunnel effect where this unit has been mounted. We used several kiddie pinwheels in the yard to find out the best place to mount all of this and were lucky as it turned out to be right next to the solar panel system. We will only need about 15 foot of wire to get it all connected! The first test mounting. This system is designed to assist the solar panel system we are currently using. In a effort to keep the neighbors happy (we really all get along nicely) we decided to create a larger version of the spinner hot air balloon we have on the porch.
Since it is a vertical unit we placed a lot of the design on relieving stress on the generator. A 2 bearing system uses new racing Kart bearings. They are stainless and can handle high speeds with very low friction. Everything will be painted. The main and generator bearings will be protected with a rubber cover from Lowe's to keep water out.
Painted! The "Basket" is the bottom of a plastic trash can tie wrapped to the radio tower mount. It flies!!! Just after the install we had a good gust of wind and it started spinnin! Now to get the rest of the system installed. I will post more photos of that in a few days. Click here to see part 2! http://www.windynation.com/community/threads/it-is-alive-alive-well-sort-of.993/
Just wondering.......where did this vawt come from? If it can spin that alternator then I want one. The 200 year old oak tree is blocking what I have now, and since it was here first, it stays.
I built it using a Hot air balloon spinner as the design and then over sized it. It spins the alternator fine, but we just not any have decent wind of late. It was tested with a leaf blower (pointed from the ground) and it makes power.
