Hello; Need help designing this small Solar system for a lake house if lose of grid for an extended period. 1. Trying to only power an 18cu ft fridge that the tag shows total amps of 4.5. 2. Might want to power a couple of 110v LED bulbs at 9w ea. 3. My boathouse roof is perfect for mounting panels. Pointing due S. I would have (4) 12v 155 amp/hr golf cart batts with 292 run min. at 25 amp. 4. The boat house is approx. 100 ft from the house. I have 10 gauge Underground Romex run to the Boathouse that would supply power from an Inverter. Is there significant loss from the inverter to the house? How many panels would be needed. I am in East Texas. Sincerely; Robert Dragisic robtdrag@yahoo.com
There are many calculations for off grid living. For your exsample 4.5 amps x 120v =540 watts so you need to to know how much power your fridge draws in a 24hr period. This is done by using a plug in kilowatt meter. lets say it draws 540 watts for 15 min per hr.=81 watt hrs x 24 hrs=1944 watt hrs or 2kw. 2000watts/12v=170amp hr battery bank at full depletion. at a 50% depletion would be 334 amp hr battery bank then you need to produce that power every day with panels you need to produce 2kw in 4 hrs full sun or not. full sun with 250w panels 1 250w panel x4hrs=1kw (or 3 100w panels) so you would need about 3 250w panels. 3 because of efficiancy losses. 4-6 to cover winter and crappy days. these are just rough numbers but in the ball park. Use an MPPT charge controller There are many off grid calculators on line Hope this helps
Mr. Leamy; Now on to inverters: For the fridge and LED 110 bulbs and maybe a LED TV. Will a modified Sine Wave unit work? Robert
Use pure sine wave. Modified sign wave will cause buzzing as well as other problems in the electronics. Hope this helps
