Hi all, Yea I am still alive. OK here is what has been going on. I did finally get my VAWT done. I will throw up a photo. I have had a major problem with my PMA, it was junk, fell apart. Any way so here I am with a some what expensive lawn ornament. Which my lovely wife always has time to point out to me. So I am in search for a new PMA. I know the fine folks here sell them. But here is my main concern, the closed case. Heat is the evil to all that is electronics. I am going straight to a GTI no battery charging. You guys have always been great here. HELP.
Hi Leamy, No not yet. Got some thing in mind. And Thank You for the liking the VAWT. Just put it together with stuff around the house. I used balsa wood for the ribs, roof flashing for the skin of the wings and ¼ Aluminum that I used to attach to the circles which are ¼ polycarbonate.
I made one of those lawn ornaments too. I made mine out of .250 pink insulation. Spins way faster, and quiet too. If you go to windstuffnow.com you will find the guy that started the Lenze wing. I don't think you want to spend any money on a PMA for that setup. Your going to have to build your own PMA to work with the wings.
How many RPM's do you think it will do with some kind of load on it? A digital tachometer would figure that out real quick. ecar, do you have any pictures of yours?
Hi ecar. Never thought about insulation. You are most likely right about the build your own. Do you know any good links to do it. Any one have any luck with these washing machine motors. Not real sure of the RPM`s on this my tack died.
This is the first one. Six foot high, I increased the original dimensions. These wings are nine inches at the radius, and twenty inches long. Covered in old Wallpaper, and a handy hint, didn't work for to long in the weather. As you can see, lots of time and effort and a Wind Blue PMA. It sorta worked, and it's in the Big Pile of education down in the basement.
Any one have any luck with these washing machine motors. I was looking at those too. For all the money that I have spent on the GM style, that's what I would do now. The diameter is what you are looking at with low RPM. Ford helped with figgerin it out too. If you have the stock small frame alternator, for a few bucks more you can get a Large frame, and they say it will give you a better charge at idle. The rotor is a bigger diameter.
Andy...I have pic of my newest one on here somewhere. Used Gorilla Glue and out door house paint to keep the UV off the foam. A heat gun workes to shape the radius.
Is is this one ? http://www.windynation.com/community/threads/high-winds-in-north-east-usa.1034/#post-6117
Thats the one Tom. Here it is being used to see if it's worth making a new and improved version. I think a down draft or micro burst got it one windy night.
Well I will say one thing ecar, that had to hurt. Wow thats a nice set up TomT. So I guess I am gong to try my hand at a Axial Flux Alternator. I have been looking around and doing a lot of reading and on u tube. And being the brain dead person I can be, I`am lost. I went to Ed's site not much there. So any thoughts or links you can throw my way, I would appreciate it. I have 2 aluminum disk well they work or do I need to use steel for the rotor. Also I know a lot of folks use rare earth magnets, any thoughts on Ferrite or ceramics. Thanks for all the help guys.
You have to use steel or there will not be a return path for the magnetism and performance will suffer real bad. Depends on how big you want to go. http://www.windgenkits.com/ They sell the stuff for a good 9 inch 400 watt vawt setup. http://store.otherpower.com/ They sell kits for bigger machines and parts. http://dairylandwindpower.us/ Chris Olson is helping Orlan on youtube with his build right now. He has built turbines with ferrite magnets. http://www.scoraigwind.com/download/index.htm Can find more here.
Hi TomT, Thanks for all the great info. I it will take me some time to get through all of it. One thing I did was to check out Chris Olson on U Tube but could not find him. Any way what I am looking at making is a 9 coil dual unit.
Try this link. http://www.youtube.com/user/OlsonFarms/videos?view=0 Also the Win Gen unit is a 9 coil dual plate 400 watt axial flux. http://www.scoraigwind.com/pmgbooklet/itpmg.pdf Also link to PMG manual.
Here ya go.....no need to learn anything, just buy it! http://www.hurricanewindpower.com/air-boss-axial-flux-apma-120V/
