Hi everyone, I came across this site today and i have decided to get a wind generator. More than likely the one on this site. The Windtura 500 Complete Wind Turbine Kit. HOWEVER, This is all Greek to me in a way. I do understand how a system will work, but i need to know what all i would need to tie this system into batteries OR my main power grid. What controllers will i need for both setups? Any and all help would be very much appreciated. Thanks Old Hippy in Ohio
Hello yourself hippydude man I know what you mean when you say it all looks Greek to you.. 1st easy way is to write directly to the Windy info site and talk to them. They will probably discuss with you on what your options are to make use of their product and what you will be needing. Actually they are going to be able to supply you with almost everything you will need or they will give you references on where else to purchase. I know there is a ton of chatter on the forum and usually the info you want is already there, but where to start looking right. There are going to be lots of people to help but take some short steps first as suggested and then get back to us. murray
I HAVE A TREADMILL MOTOR/DC MOTOR THAT I WOULD LIKE TO CONVERT TO A WIND TURBINE AND TO CONTACT TO A SOLAR PANEL. CAN YOU PLEASE DIRECT ME AND LET ME KNOW WHAT I NEED TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN. WHAT I NEED NO TO HAVE IT GO ON OVER LADO OR DISCHARGE? CAN YOU PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT WHAT PODUCT I NEED? PLEASE KEEP I MIND THAT IAM WORK WITH 12 VOLTS.
Can you tell us the specs of the motor first: volts, amps and rpm ratings? With this information we can at least tell you if your motor would be any good as a wind turbine. Thanks.
Hi, I too just found this site and am impressed with all the great post and knowledge available. With that said, I do have several questions regarding wind power and grid tie inverters. My humble little system is a Windmax 400w three blade turbine, 3 phase 12vac and a wind & pv hybrid controller. The turbine is roof mounted and was originally set up for charging a deep cycle battery that would feed a Trace 2000 inverter. A Harbor Freight 45w solar system was also tied in to the controller. It was enough to run lights a stereo and some tools in my basement work shop. Worked well for over 2 years. Then I found a Sun-500G-WAL on line that I couldn't resist. This is a 3 phase AC unit with dump load terminals rated for 10.8v to 30v. I noticed that it really seems to break the turbine in moderate wind but appears to be working. All was well until I bought a Kill A Watt monitor yesterday. With 10 to 15 mph winds and up to 25 mph gusts I expected to see something more than nothing. I am wondering if I did something wrong! Totally shattered my thought that I was putting a little dent in my electric bill. One thought was to reinstall the hybrid controller less the battery and use a 3 phase bridge rectifier to the GTI. This way I can use the solar panels and have take advantage of the built in dump load. Another thought was to get another 500w GTI with a higher volt rating and run them in parallel and use the charge controller and solar for another project mentioned below. I going in the right direction? Any help on this would be very appreciated. More on topic with the last post ... I also have been working on a tread mill motor wind turbine. This is a PMDC #B17250R040 unit with 2.5 hp constant duty rating capable of 1865 w. I made some PVC blades and it appears to spool up fairly well. It is a bit heavy and a little crude but a fun project none the less. It will eventually be pole mounted in the back yard 20 feet or so above the trees. I do not expect to harvest much from this unit but would like get this on a GTI. Any suggestions on this? Thanks!
